Industrial Estimator- Surface and Underground
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
• Evaluate new bid opportunities for constructability and internal suitability.
• Summarize and present high-level scoping of potential projects to internal stakeholders for go/ no go
approval.
• Visit project work sites, participate in pre-bid meetings, clarify scope of work, and prepare RFI’s.
• Accurately utilize project plans and specifications to identify scopes of work, assign crews, schedules,
materials, and subcontracting opportunities
• Interpret drawings and plans to create detailed material takeoffs.
• Create detailed cost estimates using HCSS Heavy Bid estimating software, and or internal worksheets, to
produce detailed estimates that follow the pricing format required by the client.
• Research pricing for estimates based on historical and regional costs.
• Develop self-performed estimates for trades that our client chooses to self-perform.
• Understand and seek out specialty subcontractors and suppliers that will assist in the fulfillment of the
requirements of the project.
• Work closely with subcontractors, suppliers, and other stakeholders through the bid process to
understand and capture the complete scope of each trade involved in the project and the overall estimate.
• Obtain current material and equipment quotes used in the development of an estimate.
• Work closely with other estimators and business unit leaders to develop strategy, competitive
differentiation, and an overall understanding of the project.
• Coordinate and lead estimate reviews with business unit leaders and or other estimators to finalize
estimates in HCSS.
• Develop and/or manage the development of preliminary bid schedules based on the information provided
in the RFP, utilizing MS Project software.
• Understand and manage our client’s risk as part of the proposal preparation process.
• Prepare and submit written technical proposals, and fill out all other bid documents, accurately
addressing the project owners’ requests for proposals by the bid submission deadline.
Minimum Requirements:
• Field experience, or education in Civil, Mechanical, Structural Engineering, or Project/Construction
management preferred.
• 3-5 years of experience in heavy industrial, or commercial estimating required.
• General knowledge and understanding of new construction, and process maintenance and repair work
relating to surface and underground mine sites.
• Experience delivering lump sum, design build, and time and materials estimates for projects
encompassing; civil, structural foundations, structural steel erection, piping, mechanical installations,
and other industrial applications preferred.
• HCSS (Heavy Bid Software), MS Project, and Excel strongly preferred.
• Experience identifying and presenting alternative delivery methods, or value engineering preferred.
• Strong prioritization and organizational skills
• Flexibility, sense of urgency, and the ability to multi-task.
• Highly productive and willing to manage a busy work schedule independently.
• Strong verbal and written (technical) communication and presentation skills.
Work Environment:
• Work may require occasional weekend and/or evening work.
• Regular office environment expectations.
o Sitting at least 80%
o Standing, walking and bending at least 10%
• Infrequent travel to job sites may be required. In those circumstances there are the following industrial
environment expectations:
o The environment may include minimal exposure to hazards typical of an industrial job site
o Personal protective equipment is required when on job sites, including hard hats, hearing
protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and – as needed- respirators, gloves, and other
required protective equipment as needed.
