Turner Staffing Group is recruiting a Geotechnical Engineer for a direct hire opportunity in the Elko, Nevada area. This position offers the opportunity to play a key role in the technical evaluation, engineering, and future development of a well-established gold mining operation. Working closely with technical and operational teams, you’ll provide geotechnical expertise that supports safe, efficient, and sustainable mining practices.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced mining geotechnical professional who enjoys solving complex engineering challenges and contributing to long-term mine planning.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct geotechnical investigations including drilling programs, rock and soil sampling, laboratory testing, and field mapping.
  • Analyze rock mass behavior, slope stability, ground support requirements, and soil mechanics.
  • Develop geotechnical models for both open pit and underground mining operations.
  • Perform advanced numerical modeling using FLAC3D and other industry-leading software.
  • Support mine design optimization, stope sequencing, excavation stability, and ground control planning.
  • Design and evaluate:
    • Underground ground support systems
    • Stope dimensions, ore dilution estimates, and Equivalent Linear Overbreak Slough (ELOS)
    • Pit slopes and bench configurations
    • Waste rock dumps
    • Tailings storage facilities
  • Monitor ground conditions using geotechnical instrumentation including prisms, piezometers, extensometers, MPBX systems, and radar.
  • Interpret monitoring data and identify geotechnical hazards including slope failures, rockfalls, subsidence, and seismic risks.
  • Develop mitigation strategies and provide day-to-day geotechnical guidance to mine operations.
  • Participate in mine planning, scheduling, and drill-and-blast optimization.
  • Prepare technical reports, engineering documentation, and risk assessments.
  • Support permitting activities and regulatory compliance.
  • Coordinate with geology, mine engineering, survey, environmental teams, contractors, and consultants.
  • Mentor junior engineers and present technical findings to management.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering, Geological Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering or Rock Mechanics preferred.
  • 5–8+ years of geotechnical engineering experience in the mining industry.
  • Strong understanding of rock mechanics, soil mechanics, and ground support design.
  • Experience performing slope stability analysis and geotechnical risk assessments.
  • Proficiency with geotechnical and mine design software, including:
    • FLAC3D
    • Rocscience Suite (Unwedge, Dips)
    • GeoStudio
    • Surpac
    • Vulcan
    • AutoCAD
    • GIS platforms
  • Experience with advanced numerical modeling is preferred; training and mentoring are available for qualified candidates.
